Poems 1960-2010

A DREAM

I

The cliff
is sheer, harsh
unlike

the others I’ve
known wch are
softened

with lupin,
broom, down
to the sea.

I walk on
a ledge,
narrow, of granite /

my hands
full of dolphins,
embryo dolphins /

come to do
what I
have been told.

II

The sea is black
with seals: they move
with the ease

the roundness
of otters; seals
made small

by the depth
& distance / the dolphins
are eager to leap:

I throw them
into the sea
out of sight. Food,

food / I
did not ask
for a reason.

III

They churn
the sea: air
turns to black spray

I breathe
the water
risen to the cliff

the seals
dolphins are
swallowed by sand

IV

A horse is born
from the center
of the moon /

rises from
the flats
to the granite ledge

I jump
to his back /
we leap into air

to count the
elements
in the sea-wet sky:

all in its
place / all
in its place
